What's Happening in DC?
On March 21, 2007, an event was held to examine best practices and visualize
future directions to enhance community based employment for people with disabilties.
The Region III CRP-RCEP along with cosponsors The ARC of the District of Columbia,
DC Department of Human Services, Rehabilitation Services Administration and
the Department on Disability Services held a one day training event "Charting
the Future: Connecting to Work with Supported Employment". The event took
place at Catholic University and over 100 vocational rehabilitation service
providers and related staff were in attendance. The event kicked off with a
greeting from the DC Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, Neil
Albert, and the cosponsors.
This was followed by talks from nationally known leaders, (Dr.Paul Wehman
and Neil Romano) as well as experts from key agencies (Elizabeth Parker and
Kathy Sawyer) who shared their knowledge, insights and visions for improving
employment outcomes for individuals who attend workshops or day programs using
a supported employment approach. Next, participants engaged in an activity
that was specifically designed to clarify the challenges faced, celebrate successes,
and identify strategies to continue to move forward with making employment
a reality for individuals with significant disabilities.
Later, in the afternoon participants rotated through learning stations to
gain knowledge about key concepts and strategies associated with supported
employment that could immediately be used in their daily practices. Review
of the evaluations indicate this was a very successful event. In the next month
the CRP-RCEP representative and cosponsors will be meeting to refine a schedule
of future trainings.
