What's Happening in Maryland?
During the first year of funding for the Region III CRP-RCEP, the Maryland CRP-RCEP state liaison, Howard Green, has worked to develop a training and technical assistance plan for community rehabilitation programs in Maryland. Several planning meetings have taken place with representatives from Department of Rehabilitative Services (DORS), Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA), Mental Health Administration (MHA). Invitations to others stakeholders such as MD APSE, Maryland Works, MD Workforce Promise, MD Department of Disability, TransCen, Region III DBTAC were extended to discuss the training and TA needs for Maryland Community Rehabilitation Programs. In addition the Maryland Association of Community Services has been added to the planning group.
Also, an online needs assessment was made available. Priority training areas identified to date include Supported Employment 101, advanced job development and the need for regional forums to discuss employment needs and building relationships. Trainings and forums are being planned on these areas. The SE 101 training is scheduled for September 28, October 20, & November 30, 2006. This training will be repeated in Spring of 2007.
The CRP RCEP staff will be providing a training session on Public-Private Partnerships at the 2006 Annual Maryland Rehabilitation Association and Division of Rehabilitation Services Training Conference on November 2 & 3.
The CRP-RCEP liaison for Maryland has met with 2 community rehabilitation programs (Chesterwye Center and Ardmore Enterprises) to start a dialogue about training and technical assistance needs. A meeting to formalize a training and TA plan was held with Ardmore on July 11th, 2006 and the initial training activity is scheduled for October 16th for the entire staff of Ardmore Enterprises. Chesterwye Center is in process of hiring a Community Employment Coordinator and then will schedule a meeting with the VCU-CRP RCEP liaison to begin developing a plan of action.
Several community rehabilitation programs in Maryland participated in the two Supported Employment Web Courses (the certificate course that serve as an overview of supported employment) and the specialty course that focuses on supported employment for persons with severe mental illness which ran from January 2006 through May 2006. Discussion have been held with the Maryland MHA supported employment coordinator to assist with the next on-line Mental Illness web course as well as assist in recruiting more participants from the Maryland providers.
